The family of a previously “perfectly healthy” 15-month-old baby girl who died just two days after receiving routine childhood vaccinations during a wellness check is searching for answers to explain their daughter’s sudden death.
Melody Rain Palombi-Malmgren, who lived with her family in Greenwood Lake, N.Y., went into cardiac arrest and died on October 19 after receiving three vaccines: varicella, DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis), and Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b).
The child’s parents took her to Herbert Kania Pediatric Group in Warwick, N.Y., to receive the three shots, which are part of the recommended schedule as established by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
“She was a perfectly healthy child,” said Katherine Palombi, the little girl’s mother. “I’m in complete shock.”
Everything seemed fine the morning before little Melody’s sudden death. Her mom waved goodbye after dropping the child off at her grandmother’s house, only to receive a call a little later on from the grandmother explaining to Palombi that her daughter was having trouble breathing.
“I was in complete shock,” Palombi told News12. “Like, what just happened? Is she choking on something? Did she get into something? That was my first thought because I’m, like, this child is perfectly healthy.”

Melody was quickly rushed to St. Anthony’s Hospital by ambulance after her grandmother tried unsuccessfully to perform CPR on the child. Palombi rushed home from work, only to discover that a police officer was waiting at the door.
The officer reportedly offered to rush Palombi to the hospital “because he knew how serious it was.”
“By the time I got to the hospital, they put me in a room,” Palombi recalled. “And they just kept saying, ‘We’re working on her.'”
“They were going over everything from that morning because she’d gotten into something. I just kept saying, ‘She had vaccines. A couple of days before this, she had vaccines.'”
Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and other medical staff spent hours trying to revive little Melody, but to no avail.
“They brought me in the room and I saw her lying there,” Palombi said. “They said, ‘Time of death: 11:13.’ And I just completely hit the floor.”
Official records from the hospital show that Melody suffered liver and kidney failure along with cardiac arrest. The actual cause of her sudden death is still under investigation pending an autopsy.
According to Children’s Health Defense (CHD) Senior Research Scientist Karl Jablonowski, PhD, little Melody could have just as well received six vaccines that day instead of just the three she got. Even with half the normal amount, Melody’s fragile body could not handle it.
Dr. Elizabeth Mumper, president and CEO of The Rimland Center for Integrative Medicine, told The Defender that Melody’s labs showed elevated enzymes in the liver, heart, and muscle, “suggesting catastrophic damage.”
“Her electrolytes were abnormal, suggesting her body lost the ability to maintain homeostasis, a balance of body chemistry,” Mumper added. “In investigating sudden deaths in babies, it is crucial to consider all possible causes. In this case, the baby had four vaccines two days prior. Sudden death is one of the ‘unavoidable unsafe’ reactions to vaccines and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of what happened to this beautiful baby.”
“Analysis of VAERS [Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System] safety data shows a clustering of ‘sudden infant death syndrome’ cases in the days just following vaccinations. My heart goes out to the family.”
