Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) exposed the tripartite alliance between the White House, Facebook and the U.K.-based Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) to censor anti-vaccine content on social media.
In a Sept. 5 tweet on X (formerly Twitter), Jordan accused the CCDH of feeding false information to the Biden White House. “The Biden [administration] then uses the full weight of the federal government to coerce Facebook to censor Americans, Biden’s critics and political opponents and the truth,” he continued.
The controversy began in March 2021 when the CCDH released a report about the so-called “Disinformation Dozen.” The 12 accounts named in the report were allegedly responsible for 65 percent of anti-vaccine content on social media. However, the Ohio congressman pointed out the report’s inaccuracy, stating that the actual number was closer to 0.05 percent – something that even Facebook itself recognized.
Nevertheless, the White House still embraced the CCDH’s incorrect statistics and pressured Facebook to take action against these accounts. But the social media platform was reluctant, fearing that it could unfairly censor users who hadn’t violated any rules. Internal documents suggest that Facebook employees were drafting a memo to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg indicating “pressure from … the White House” to censor the Disinformation Dozen despite no clear justification.
Accounts from the Disinformation Dozen and their affiliates numbered to 34, yet only six out of this total were found to have violated policies. By July 2021, Facebook had censored 11 of the 12 accounts in the core group. Moreover, former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki mentioned the Disinformation Dozen during a July 15, 2021 press briefing. Following the July 15 press conference, Facebook Vice President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg met with the office of U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. The site’s employees attempted to prepare persuasive information about what Facebook had done about the Disinformation Dozen. However, one Facebook employee remarked: “Nothing we say will be persuasive to that crew.”
The Ohio congressman continued that the situation had not improved, with the press continuing to cite CCDH’s faulty statistics. Facebook’s relationship with the Biden White House had reportedly become strained, with the administration urging Facebook to take further action against the alleged disinformation actors.
Jordan accused the social media platform of “tailoring” solutions to the White House’s concerns rather than addressing real problems. The House Judiciary Committee under him has taken notice of the censorship allegations, and has demanded documents from both Facebook and the executive department.
CCDH mentioned in its report that “the Disinformation Dozen … continually violate the terms of service agreements on Facebook and Twitter.” Ty and Charlene Bollinger, Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Dr. Joseph Mercola were some of the names included in the list of 12.
“While some anti-vaxxers identified by CCDH have been removed from a single platform, comprehensive action has yet to be taken, and most remain active on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter,” the nonprofit reported on its website. It also claimed that “[d]eplatforming repeat offenders is the most effective way of stopping the proliferation of dangerous misinformation.”
